| VHJOE Anatomy Interactions One
purpose of the this journal is to expose the reader to the
Visible Human Interactive Atlas created at the University
of Colorado. This tool is a unique and powerful resource,
enabling physicians to reference actual planar anatomy which
correlates to a diagnostic image. To that end, this editorial
column will provide a relevant digital anatomy image from
the tool with each issue.
This Month, there is an excellent
expert review on celiac block injection by Dr. Manoop Bhutani
from the UTMB-Galveston. It seemed fitting to put in a view
of the anatomic landmark used for this therapy. Below are
shown the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery branches.
The image is more than a picture. If you
have loaded the required JAVA files onto your computer, click
on the image and you will initialize the Visible Human Interactive
Atlas (represented below). Once in the database,
you can position your mouse over the image and indentify the
structures. Furthermore, you will see models of relevant landmark
anatomy, with a plane through the models to show the origin
of the oblique image. This plane can be repositioned and the
image changed, much like in a live examination. When you inititialize
the Atlas, you will see the oblique anatomy image on the right
of your screen, a model of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric
artery on the left, and controls below the image windows.
The ability to interact with the Atlas is
an important aspect of this journal and I hope you all take
part.
If you have problems installing the requisite
software please click the "questions or comments"
link on the home page or send an email describing the problem
to pubvhjoe@uchsc.edu.
The JAVA instructions which are required
to interact with the data base are available from a link found
on the home page of VHJOE The link is entitled "Install
Interactive Atlas." Just follow instructions to download
and install the program.
There have been occasional firewall problems
with downloading the JAVA instructions from the WEB in some
systems. If you are unable to download the required programs,
a CD ROM disc with the instructions is available from your
Astra-Zeneca representative.
I encourage you to utilize this fascinating
aspect of the journal.
