Visible Human: Pylorus, Pancreatic
Head, and Portal Venous System
This issue’s VH movie starts with
views at the level of the pylorus similar to those obtained
during an EUS exam. As the film runs, one notes the excellent
viewing of the pancreatic head and the portal venous system,
beginning with the superior mesenteric vein and progressing
to the splenic vein.
One can also see the images obtained from the pylorus are
exactly reverse of the images obtained from the stomach during
EUS. This is because the EUS views from the pylorus and duodenum
are viewed in a posterior to anterior orientation, whereas
EUS visualization from the stomach supplies anterior to posterior
views.
In the still image, the major venous structures have been
identified in green. The heart can be seen in the superior
part of the image. The linked image can take one into the
Visible Human Interactive Atlas for more in-depth interrogation.
